ATIKOKAN — Driving into the ditch near Atikokan resulted in two separate sets of impaired driving charges.

According to a release put out by the Ontario Provincial Police, the first incident occurred on Jan. 8, at about 9 a.m., when a vehicle crashed into the ditch on Highway 11 near Seine River.

Officers attended and found the driver to be allegedly impaired by drug consumption. The driver was arrested on the scene and taken to OPP headquarters for further evaluation.

As a result, a 48-year-old Garden River, Ont. woman was charged with one count of impaired operation, alcohol or drug, one count of dangerous operation, one count of possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance and one count of care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.

Four days later, at about 2:30 a.m. on Jan 12, OPP received a report of another vehicle in a ditch on Highway 11, this time near Lerome Lake.

A quick investigation led officers to believe the accused was impaired by alcohol consumption and the 35-year-old woman was placed under arrest and taken back to the detachment where a breathalyzer test was conducted.

The accused was charged with one count of impaired operation, alcohol or drug and one count of impaired operation, blood alcohol concentration 80 milligrams or over. Their vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.

Both of the accused were released by police and are scheduled to appear in court in Atikokan on Jan. 30.
