Driver charged after vehicle lands on Lake Superior ice

THUNDER BAY — A city motorist faces charges after an incident Friday evening at the Mission Marsh Conservation Area on Mission Island.

After responding to reports that someone had driven off the roadway, Thunder Bay Police found an SUV had left the parking lot and had come to rest along rocks on the Lake Superior shoreline.

Officers allegedly observed signs of impairment, and took the driver into custody for evaluation.

A 27-year-old woman was subsequently charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and impaired driving.

Her vehicle, which was removed from the lake, was impounded for seven days.

Police have not publicly identified the accused.
