Dubinsky rink improves to 2-1 at U18 provincials

Earlier in the day Thunder Bay's Lily Wright won her third straight contest and is tied for first in Timmins.

THUNDER BAY – Claire Dubinsky won her second straight game at the Northern Ontario U18 girls curling championship, thanks to a couple of big ends.

The Thunder Bay skip scored three in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead over Cochrane’s Rihanna Third on Thursday night, then added three more in the fifth and went on to win 7-3, the two teams shaking hands after six ends.

The win improved the record of the Dubinsky squad, which includes lead Lily Ariganello, second Bella McCarville and third Rylie Paul, to 2-1.

Thunder Bay’s Lily Wright, who earlier in the day beat Timmins’ hometown favourite Skey Bergounhon 7-5, is tied atop the standings at 3-0 with another Timmins skip, Deanna Chilton. Chilton easily beat New Liskeard’s Rhya Baker 6-1 on Thursday night.

The boy’s round robin also got under way in Draw 4, but neither Thunder Bay entry was able to claim victory.

Josh Hari was defeated 7-1 by Sault Ste. Marie’s Justin MacKay and Thunder Bay’s Jacob Curtis dropped a 6-2 decision to North Bay’s Riley Winters.

The round robin continues on Friday, with three more draws scheduled.
