Marissa Scott travelled nearly 1,400 kilometres to get a first-hand look at Lakehead University.

The prospective student from the Goderich, Ont. area came with family to see what Lakehead had to offer during the university’s March Break open house, which runs Monday to Friday this week.

Scott is looking at a career in gerontology and Lakehead has one of the better programs out of the universities she’s looked at. And after a morning tour of the school, she was impressed with what she saw.

“I like it alot and I like the winter, so it works out pretty well,” she said.

One thing that stood out was the Chancellor Paterson Library.

“(It has) really nice computer labs with the (Apple) Macs and everything, good study spots and it just seems like a close campus and a lot of people know each other,” Scott said.

By coming to Lakehead and getting a look at the campus now, Scott said hopefully she won’t be too lost when she arrives on her first day of classes.

More than 100 families from across the province and in the city have registered for this week’s personalized campus tours and undergraduate recruitment manager Robert Perrier said the prospective students get paired up with current LU students to give them the lay of the land.

“You have the chance to see what it is like to be an actual student for the day,” he said. “You get to go to classes. You get to see the facilities. You see the students who are going to class right now, what that experience feels like.”

“There is no better way to meet the people that are here to support you. We are that open, personable, friendly university and that’s what we’re offering here today for people to experience firsthand.”

There are still spots available for tours. Visit mylakehead.ca for details.
