THUNDER BAY — Six different brands of shell eggs have been recalled by the Public Health Agency of Canada due to Salmonella contamination.
The eggs were distributed in Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, and, according to the recall notice, “possibly other provinces and territories.”
The recall affects the following products:
- Compliments large and extra large white eggs in packs of 12;
- Compliments large white eggs in packs of 18;
- Foremost large eggs in packs of 18;
- Golden Valley Eggs large and extra large eggs in packs of 30;
- Golden Valley Eggs jumbo-sized eggs in packs of 20;
- Golden Valley Eggs large eggs in double packs of 30;
- Golden Valley Eggs white extra large eggs in packs of 18;
- Golden Valley Eggs white large eggs in packs of 12;
- IGA extra large eggs in packs of 12;
- No Name large eggs in packs of 12 and 30;
- Western Family extra large white eggs in packs of 12;
- Western Family large white eggs in packs of 30;
The federal agency has the lot numbers of the recalled products displayed on its website.
According to the alert, people should not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute any of the recalled products and should either throw them out or return them to where they were purchased. Public health also advised that if people think they got sick from eating the recalled eggs, to contact their healthcare provider.
“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections,” the recall notice said. “Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.”
“Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”
