THUNDER BAY -- A sinkhole on a section of River Street led to its temporary closure on Thursday night to allow city workers to conduct emergency road maintenance after a sinkhole appeared on the busy street.
City officials said the road was closed between Algoma Street North and College Street, with no flow-through traffic. Local traffic was able to access residences between College and Peter streets, as well as Algoma Street North and Farrand Street.
The public was advised not to use the sidewalk in the area.
The length of the closure was undetermined at the time.

THUNDER BAY – River Street will be closed between Algoma Street North and College Street due to emergency road maintenance.
The section of River Street between Peter Street and Farrand Street will be completely closed with no flow thru traffic. Local traffic can access residences between both College Street and Peter Street, and Algoma Street North and Farrand Street, but are asked to exercise caution.
The public should not use this section of sidewalk in this area as well. The duration of the road closure is undetermined at this time.
Motorists are asked to plan an alternative route, to drive with caution, and obey all signage in the area of the road closure.
