Engineering students seek opportunity at career fair

Twenty companies from around the region were looking for the engineers of tomorrow at Lakehead University.

THUNDER BAY - Opportunity came knocking for engineering students at Lakehead University on Thursday.

Third-year mechanical engineering student Mishel Mani came to the fair with a resume in hand, and was looking to land a 16-month co-op and turn his theoretical knowledge to hands-on experience

As one of the many mechanical, chemical, civil, electrical, and software engineering students hoping to get their foot into the door, Mani said speaking to employers about the industry reassures him it's exactly what he wants to do.

“It sounds like exactly what I want to do. We're really lucky that they're a lot of people here that's out here to support us with our careers and out here to give us co-ops, which is really important too.”

PHA Engineering Ltd., Domtar, BBA, Dufferin Construction, Newgold Inc., Hatch, Canadian Pacific Rail, Toromont, and many others were on hand talking to potential future employers.

Mani said he had his eye on Goldcorp Mining Company for a job in equipment maintenance.

Kristen Bohonis, Lakehead's career zone and co-op coordinator, says the program attracts engineering students from across the world.

“It has a large impact on the school,” she said. “We’re hoping students walk away with job opportunities and networks with employers."

With more than 20 companies from across the region looking for the next best and brightest, students are optimistic about what's ahead.

Paola Garcia-Ramirez, a third year student originally from Alberta, said the opportunity for students in her program makes her optimistic about her decision.

“Most of the people that I talked to are like engineers that came here to Lakehead and are with the same company that they started with after their co-op, so that's pretty encouraging.”
