THUNDER BAY – The closure of Balmoral Street due to road work will extend for another block over the coming weeks.

As of Monday, July 11, Balmoral will be fully closed between Alloy Drive and Jasper Drive. The closure is expected to last around three weeks, the city said.

Northbound and southbound traffic will be detoured via Central Avenue, while the intersection at Balmoral and Central Avenue will remain open to through traffic on Central Avenue only.

Balmoral is currently closed between Alloy and Central Avenue, as crews complete a full reconstruction of the roadway.

During the closure, the Thunder Bay Police Service headquarters on Balmoral may be accessed via Central Avenue. Access to Grassroots Church and Evangel Church will be available via Lithium Drive.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution near the road work zone.

The work is the last phase in a major reconstruction of Balmoral that was launched in 2016, beginning at William Street.

The entire reconstruction project was originally supposed to take three years but faced various delays, including for budgetary reasons.

This year’s work faced weeks of delay as the city waited for word on an application for around $700,000 in federal funding through the federal-provincial Investing in Community Infrastructure Program.

The funds would support the addition of active transportation connections to transit stops along the route, with multi-use trails planned for both sides of Balmoral.

The city has not yet confirmed whether the trails will still be completed this year.
