THUNDER BAY – Much of Northern Ontario sits under an extreme cold warning, with wind chill values of -40 to -45C anticipated to continue Sunday and Monday night.

Environment Canada first issued warnings for northwestern regions from Atikokan to Fort Severn on Saturday. By Sunday, warnings were in effect throughout most of the province's North.

Environment Canada issues cold warnings when conditions pose elevated health risks. The agency advised residents to be mindful of elevated risks to children, older adults, those without proper shelter, and pets.

The cold snap prompted the City of Thunder Bay to issued its own cold weather alert Sunday afternoon.

"Residents are encouraged to check in with vulnerable friends, neighbours and family to ensure they are not experiencing any difficulties related to the weather," the city advised. "[Those] at greater risk include infants and children, elderly, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts, and people lacking proper shelter, clothing or food."
