FORT FRANCES, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police are cautioning Fort Frances area residents and businesses about counterfeit money circulating in the area.
OPP said they learned Monday that fake Canadian $100 bills were recently used at a business in town.
Police said counterfeit currency that's circulated over the last year in the District of Rainy River has contained the following indicators:
- bills are thick paper rather than polymer
- bills have tape instead of translucent plastic
- bills have hash marks on the top right corner of the face side, or the corner may be cut off
- in most cases, the maple leaf on the left side is not translucent, and is not a hologram
