Falcons, Vikings in contention at OFSAA championships

St. Ignatius won their only match of the day at the AA girls basketball championship in Guelph, while Hammarskjold split a pair of matches at the AA boys tournament in Stratford.

GUELPH, Ont. — The St. Ignatius Falcons got off to a great start Thursday at the OFSAA girls AA basketball championship in Guelph.

Alyssa Gvora scored 24 points as the Falcons overcame a slow start and rallied back to edge St. Theresa’s 43-39.

No. 7 St. Ignatius trailed 16-11 after the opening quarter, but a 10-3 second quarter put them on top 21-19.

The Falcons will take on No. 12 McKinnon Park on Friday at 10:45 a.m., playing for a spot in the Friday afternoon’s quarterfinal round.

The Hammarskjold Vikings boys volleyball team split its two matches on Thursday at the OFSAA boys AA championship in Stratford, Ont.

The No. 9 Vikings lost in straight sets (15-25, 22-25, 8-15) to No. 8 Port Perry High School, then rebounded with a straight set win over No. 19 Roland Michener Secondary School (26-24, 29-27). Hammarskjold will take on No. 3 Regiopolis-Notre Dame at 10 a.m. and then No. 14 St. Joseph at 1 p.m.

The top four teams from each pool move on to the single-elimination championship/consolation round.
