SCHREIBER, ON — The Township of Schreiber's efforts to attract more visitors to the north shore community received a boost Tuesday from the federal government.

FedNor funding of almost $1.7 million was announced for local projects including the construction of the North Shore Express and Discovery Centre, a new tourist attraction.

Some of the money will also go toward revitalizing the downtown core, and recruiting a consultant to help attract private sector investment.

The various initiatives will highlight Schreiber's history as a railway town.

A government announcement stated that the investments will help create up to five jobs, launch four new businesses and expand five existing businesses.

They are also projected to ultimately attract 14,000 new visitors annually to Schreiber.

The announcement was made by Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu.

Hajdu, the federal employment minister, also confirmed five years of ongoing FedNor funding, totalling $1.7 million, for the Superior North Community Futures Development Corporation, which provides services in the area between Dorion and Manitouwadge.
