THUNDER BAY – Federal Indian Day School Community Support Sessions are being held in Thunder Bay until Aug. 7.
Former Indian Day School students are being invited to make appointments for free one-on-one sessions to receive help in filing claims in relation to the Federal Indian Day School class action.
“We’re hoping to serve as many as we can, so, I think that could potentially look like up to 60 people, between 40 to 60 people," said Krystal Summers, Federal Indian Day School Community Support Program's urban strategy lead.
"It’s always a little bit hard to say, and then we also just want to give community members and claimants the time that they need to go through that process."
The Federal Indian Day School Class Action was first started in 2009 by the now late Garry McLean for Aboriginal students who were forced to attend federally run Indian Day Schools all over Canada.
The class action was settled in March 2019 and the settlement was approved by the federal court in August 2019. Former Indian Day School students have until July 2022 to submit their claims.
The support sessions will be available in Thunder Bay at the Victoria Inn on Aug. 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are open to people who experienced harm while attending federally run Indian Day School.
The support sessions will also help community members determine their eligibility to file claims in relation to the class action.
