SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. — The federal government has approved $1 million for research and commemorative activities around the former Pelican Lake Residential School.

The project will be led by Lac Seul First Nation.

The school was established near Sioux Lookout in the late 1920's and was operated for several decades by the Anglican Church of Canada.

Lac Seul First Nation will engage with 33 affiliated communities to establish cultural and spiritual protocols in locating, documenting, mapping, maintaining and commemorating burial sites associated with the school.

A recent news release from the office of Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller said the community-led process will ensure Lac Seul First Nation can undertake the work in its own way and at its own pace.

Chief Clifford Bull said the funding "will support positive relationships throughout our area to bring closure with respect to the missing children who never returned home."
