OLIVER PAIPOONGE – Daxton Lang and Jeremy Dunmore scored first-period goals five minutes apart to deliver a sixth straight win for the Kam River Fighting Walleye.
The back-to-back tallies stood the test of time in the 2-1 win, the last of the scoring at the Norwest Arena in what turned out to be a goaltending battle between Wisconsin’s Jakob Barcelona and Kam River’s Travis VanderZwaag.
Barcelona, who took the loss, stopped 40 of 42 shots he faced, while VanderZwaag was beaten only one time while facing 28 shots, including nine in the final frame.
Zach Johnson had the lone goal for the Lumberjacks, potting his third at 8:56 of the first to open the scoring.
The Fighting Walleye, currently third in the Superior International Junior Hockey League standings, improved to 6-1-0, while the Lumberjacks are left still seeking their second win of the season, falling to 1-5-2.
Kam River heads to Dryden on Wednesday to take on the front-running Ice Dogs.
Thunder Bay 3, Red Lake 2: Nunavut’s Garren Voisey scored the overtime winner to earn the North Stars their second straight triumph.
Keagan jones and Edison Weeks also scored for the visiting North Stars, who improved to 3-4-0 with the victory. Aiden Corbett, who notched his second of the season with 11 seconds to go in the second, and his third at 6:22 of the third, scored for the Miners (4-3-0).
Ethan Barron stood tall for Thunder Bay in nets, making 19 saves, while Ethan Neitsch was a little busier, stopping 40 of 43 North Stars shots.
