Fighting Walleye win fifth straight, third under new coach

Dryden's Eli Antoine scored five times in the Ice Dogs' 10-2 win over Ironwood.

OLIVER PAIPOONGE – The Kam River Fighting Walleye are digging the new Larry Wintoneak era.

The defending regular season champions won for the third straight time under the tutelage of the veteran coach, downing the Fort Frances Lakers 5-1 on Saturday to pick up the team’s fifth Superior International Junior Hockey League win in a row.

Daxton Lang had a goal and an assist and Jett Mintenko added four helpers, leading the Fighting Walleye (10-5-0) to the win. Edwin Liang, Evan Lachimea, Amar Powar and Kaden Goodwin also scored for Kam River.

Pierce Gouin had the lone goal for the visiting Lakers, who could only get one of 28 shots past Kam River goaltender Ashton Sadauskas. Nolan Koethler took the loss in net for Fort Frances, good on 34 of 39 Fighting Walleye shots directed his way.

Kam River is back on the road next Saturday and Sunday, for a pair of games against the Dryden Ice Dogs.

Dryden 10, Ironwood 2: Eli Antoine had five goals to pace the Ice Dogs to a lopsided win over the Lumberjacks. Max Roby had a pair for Dryden, a feat matched by Ironwood’s Nolan Fowler.

Sioux Lookout 4, Thunder Bay 2: Eric Blazino scored the game-winning goal at 11:46 of the third, after Thunder Bay’s Alex Remenda had netted the equalizer at the 11:46 mark of the third.

Kaden Veller added an empty netter to put the game away. Evan Simeoni, with his 11th of the season, had the other Thunder Bay goal. Ty Love and Brodie Wood also scored for the visiting Bombers, who have beaten Thunder Bay four straight times this season.
