THUNDER BAY – A fire in one unit of the Spence Court apartment building on Friday appears to have been started accidentally according to officials with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
Captain of fire prevention and investigation, Kevin Anderson, confirmed on Monday that the fire is still under investigation by the fire department but that initial findings are pointing to an accidental cause.
Fire damage was limited to one unit and none of the occupants of that unit were home at the time of the incident at the Amelia Street apartment building Friday, according to a news release issued Saturday evening.
One occupant of an adjacent unit was attended to by EMS. The release did not specify the severity of any injuries.
The fire was contained to the 5th floor unit but firefighters also encountered smoke on the 4th, and 6th floors.
"After ensuring that occupants below the fire floor had evacuated and that those on the fire floor and above had protected in place," said the release, "a quick-fire attack brought the fire under control," said the release.
Some residents have been displaced while restoration work is completed. The Red Cross is helping connect those residents with hotel accomodation until they can return to their homes.
The fire department received the call just after 8:30 p.m. and a total of 6 pumpers, and aerial ladder and a command vehicle responded.
