THUNDER BAY — An early morning fire in the downtown south core is under investigation.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials said crews responded to the structural fire in a building on the corner of May Street North and Victoria Avenue East on Thursday morning.

Thunder Bay police had said the fire was discovered just after 7:30 a.m. by officers who were sent to the neighbourhood on an unrelated call.

Fire officials said arriving crews encountered heavy smoke, but were able to make their way to the back of the building where they were able to attack and extinguish the blaze.

No occupants were found in the building.

Heavy fire damage was contained to one unit of the building, with smoke damage also present in other portions of the building. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but fire officials said police are in control of the scene and conducting an investigation.
