DRYDEN, Ont. — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has lifted the Restricted Fire Zone in place in much of northwestern Ontario since the middle of August.

It means outdoor fires are once again permitted in areas affected by the RFZ between roughly Nipigon and the Manitoba boundary.

An MNRF news release Wednesday morning noted that cooler temperatures and recent wet weather had reduced the region's fire load and the overall fire hazard.

Currently there are 53 active fires in the northwest region, of which 49 are either under observation, under control, or being held.
