The city’s fire department is urging residents to speak to children about the potential dangers of walking on ice.

In a news release issued to media Tuesday afternoon the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue states that while ice should be considered dangerous at all times, it is especially hazardous at this time of year.

“Public safety is our first priority and we want to remind residents to stay away from all bodies of water,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio.

“Exposure to icy cold water can end your life in a matter of minutes.”

The release continues to explain that in cold water the temperature of a person’s heart, brain, and other vital organs drop, leading to a loss of consciousness and drowning.

The cold water can also cause heart failure.
