SHUNIAH, ON — No one was hurt but damage was extensive after a fire late Monday in the Municipality of Shuniah.
Crews arrived at the scene in the 2400 block of Lakeshore Drive to find a garage already engulfed in flames.
The fire had also spread to an attached sauna.
Both the garage and the steam bath were destroyed.
Sixteen Shuniah firefighters worked in the cold conditions for about two hours before the blaze was declared out at 7:30 p.m.
Although the investigation continues, a portable heater is suspected to have been the source of the fire.
Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services issued a statement reminding the public about the importance of following manufacturers' recommendations for installing and using portable heaters "and to ensure sufficient clearances are maintained between heaters and any combustible materials."
