Fire erupts at former European Bakery

Firefighters remain on scene on Sunday night at the former Simpson Street business.

THUNDER BAY – Firefighters on Sunday battled a fire at the former European Bakery on Simpson Street.

Heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the building, which closed as a bakery in 2018, before that a staple of the south-side neighbourhood, which has been beset by fires in recent years.

Firefighters have blocked off a section of Simpson Street, between Rowand and Robertson streets, with police on hand to help provide security.

Firefighters concentrated efforts on the roof of the structure.

There is no word of any injuries or a cause for the fire.

Four years ago, a fire destroyed Rizzo's cabinets and the former Hells' Angels clubhouse, located next door to European Bakery.

The public is advised to steer clear of the area while the investigation continues.
