Fire guts East End apartment building

A nearby resident said the fire broke out in the early morning hours of Labour Day.

THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters have spent more than nine hours battling a fire that has gutted an apartment complex in the city's East End.

The McLaughlin Street building, which a nearby resident said was recently purchased with a plan to renovate, appears to be a total loss, the roof having collapsed and significant water damage throughout as a result of the efforts to douse the flames.

Thunder Bay police have set up a perimeter around the 500 block of McLaughlin Street while firefighters continue to put the fire out and while the investigation into the cause of the fire is conducted.

There is no word on any injuries or if anyone was inside the structure when the fire broke out.

Police have asked the public to avoid the area if possible.
