THUNDER BAY — It's always a good reminder to play it safe when cooking in the kitchen, especially over a long weekend.
As the start of Fire Prevention Week kicks off on Sunday, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding residents that unattended cooking could result in disaster along with distractions in the kitchen or cooking while under the influence of alcohol.
Being fire-safe in the kitchen can also include maintaining a tidy, uncluttered workspace and avoiding wearing loose-fitting clothing that could risk catching fire.
In a release, Fire Chief Greg Hankkio says accidents can happen, "Accidents can happen but can be avoided by practicing fire safety in the kitchen [but] keeping a lid close to slide over a pot in the event of a fire, keeping a clear area around the stove, and avoiding distractions to focus on the task at, hand are good prevention measures.”
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is also encouraging homeowners to have working smoke alarms installed on every storey and tested at least once a month.
Everyone in the home should also practice a home fire escape plan for a safe escape in an emergency.
