THUNDER BAY -- Three adults were taken to hospital for treatment following a fire at Dawson Apartments on Dawson Street.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, in a release, said they arrived on scene at about 4:30 a.m. following a 911 call, where they encountered heavy smoke and flame coming from a ground-floor apartment.
Crews began an attack, knocking down the fire in the involved unit, while at the same time evacuating the entire building. According to the release, smoke filled the hallways of the ground floor of the apartment complex and also started making its way to the upper floors of the building.
Heavy smoke and carbon monoxide were cleared through ventilation from the ground floor and the two floors above the fire.
A pet dog was also in the apartment and removed. The victims were initially treated for by Superior North EMS paramedics before being transported to hospital.
The fire damage was contained to one unit. Fire and water damage to the unit was considered heavy.
Crews remained on scene to help residents safely return to their units, while working with the property manager to secure the building's fire alarm system.
The scene is being held until investigators can complete a full investigation into the cause of the fire.
A total of six pumpers responded, one aerial ladder and one command unit with the platoon chief.
