Firefighters called to former Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital

Reports of smoke emanating from the now-closed facility prompted the call for service on Monday night.

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews appeared to make quick work of the situation after witnesses spotted smoke pouring from the former Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital.

Crews on Monday evening had a fan set up at the front entrance of the building, which was closed for good in 2018 after more than seven decades in service.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said there was minimal damage to the ceiling structure and some content damage, but the building was vacant. They added the fire was likely started by trespassers. Witnesses said they saw youth running away from the building at that time.
