THUNDER BAY – City police are hoping to speak to a person that may have fallen through the ice on Tuesday afternoon on the McIntyre Floodway.

In a release issued just before 11 p.m., police say they've discontinued search efforts, having not located anyone in the waterway. They were notified at approximately 5:15 p.m. by a witness who said they saw an individual, armed with a stick, fall through the thinning ice, dropping up to their chest.

The gender of the individual in question is not known at this time.

The person was described as wearing beige cargo pants and a blue jacket, possibly plaid in nature.

Firefighters spent much of Tuesday evening searching the McIntyre River, deploying an inflatable boat to conduct the search, which concentrated on several sections of the river.

If someone did fall through the ice, police are asking that person to contact them immediately in order to confirm their welfare. They are also asking anyone who might have been in the Intercity area if they might have seen someone matching the description walking on the ice or in the area with wet clothing to phone police.

"All details are important," the release states.

Police also request that anyone who recognizes the description of the person and that person cannot be located, to call the authorities at 684-1200 or 911.

An update is expected to be provided on Wednesday.
