THUNDER BAY — Firefighters were concerned about the risk of an explosion when they responded to an incident at a city grain elevator Tuesday.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue released details about the incident Wednesday morning.

It said firefighters were dispatched to the Richardson terminal in Current River where they encountered smoke and high temperatures around machinery on the upper level of the bin floor.

"The situation posed significant challenges, as crews worked to manage both the malfunctioning equipment and the risk of a dust explosion – a serious concern in grain facilities."

TBFR said hot and humid weather compounded their difficulties, but after several hours, the emergency was brought under control.

A total of six pumpers, an aerial ladder and a command vehicle were deployed to the incident.
