Lakehead Public Schools are getting some major upgrades over the next five years

The board outlines its five year capital plan Tuesday, highlighting some of its successes over the last year. The eventual $11.3 million upgrades include everything from beautification to accessibility at local public schools. It also includes a technology boost. Board superintendent of business Kathy Pozihun said by the end of the year, every elementary classroom will have a Smart Board. And all four of the board’s high schools will have wireless capability. Getting the board’s sixty buildings to be more energy efficient is also included.

“We’ve done some considerable work in energy management,” Pozihun said.

Woodcrest, Hyde Park and Agnew H. Johnston schools will also see expansions or major renovations to gear-up for full-day kindergarten classes.

Although some capital funding in future years is tied to enrollment, Pozihun said the board will be prepared.

“Certainly as enrollment declines, the funding declines in proportion but being in the North we also have some adjustments to the funding formula,” she said.

Elementary enrollment is down one per cent this year, which the board sees as a positive sign.

“That is the lowest decline we’ve seen in years,” Pozihun said,

Secondary enrollment is down eight per cent.
