Flood warning issued for Thunder Bay district

Light precipitation over the weekend could cause local water levels and flows to begin rising again.

THUNDER BAY – A flood warning has been issued for the District of Thunder Bay, with light precipitation forecast for the weekend potentially causing local waterways that had been declining after recent flooding to flatline or increase.

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry issued the warning Friday, saying it would be in effect until Tuesday, May 24.

“Residents in Kaministiquia River, Dog Lake, Shebandowan Lake, Kashabowie Lake and Lac des Mille Lacs watersheds should exercise extreme caution around less travelled roads, bridges, water-crossings, lakes, and rivers,” the ministry advised. “Prolonged periods of high water are expected.”

Below seasonal temperatures with precipitation of less than 10 millimetres is forecast over the next two days in the area, the ministry said.

That could cause local waterways, which remain elevated after the area was slammed with heavy rainfall in recent weeks, to reverse a declining trend.
