Flying J has no immediate plans to build in city, company says

Officials with the American company Pilot Flying J says they have no immediate plans to build their long-awaited truck stop and travel centre in Thunder Bay.

Officials with the American company Pilot Flying J says they have no immediate plans to build their long-awaited truck stop and travel centre in Thunder Bay.

This comes following comments by city staff at a public meeting on Tuesday that the company may be looking to re-submit its application to develop their property here.
Utah-based Flying J had first proposed building a travel plaza at the corner of Oliver Road and the Thunder Bay Expressway in 2004.

City Council approved the $7 million project, but neighbours fought the development for years before finally reaching a compromise in 2007.  In 2008, Flying J went into bankruptcy protection in the U.S., and then merged with Pilot Travel Centers in 2010.

Pilot Flying J spokesperson Sharon Donnell, speaking from their head office in Knoxville, Tennesee, said the company is still holding onto the 20-acre property.

But she added that there are no plans to build on it, at least not this year.

There are about 550 Pilot and Flying J retail outlets across North America.
