THUNDER BAY — A Niagara-area woman is the latest millionaire crowned by the Thunder Bay 50/50 jackpot.
According to a release issued on Friday by the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, Fonthill’s Jeannette Kulik got the call from foundation president and CEO Glenn Craig, learning she’d won $1,638,382.
It caught her off guard.
“Stop,” she said after picking up the call.
“Do you want me to hang up and call someone else?” Craig asked.
“No, no, no, please talk. Please talk,” she replied.
The call came a day after Kulik had been joking with her co-workers, telling them she was going to win the lottery and retire.
The joke, it seems, is now reality.
“People are not going to believe me,” she said. “I told them I was going to win and now I have.”
Retirement may be at the top of her list, but Kulik has some other ideas for some of the largesse.
“Probably some projects around the house, maybe take a trip or buy a new car.”
Kulik says she may live in southern Ontario, just outside of Niagara Falls, but she’s got plenty of connections with Northern Ontario.
“I’m a northern girl at heart. My parents were both from the north. I spent many summers up north.”
Since launching in January 2021, more than $65 million in prizes have been awarded through the Thunder Bay 50/50 draw, which has handed out more than $1 million a month for the past 20 months.
May’s draw is now open and features more than $100,000 in early-bird prizes, with bonus numbers returning on the $20 and $75 ticket packages.
Tickets are available at www.thunderbay5050.ca.
The next grand prize draw takes place on May 30.
