THUNDER BAY – As the holiday season approaches, the Regional Food Distribution Association is looking for donations to stock its shelves.

From Thursday until Saturday, more than a dozen grocery stores across Thunder Bay will be participating in the annual Harvest for Hunger food drive.

RFDA horticulturalist and engagement coordinator, Alexandra Grzelewski, said this food drive is vital for the organization as it gears up for the Christmas season.

“Our demand goes up” said Grzelewski. “This is a great event that secures us for that upcoming flux.”

The RFDA is grateful for any donations and Grzelewski said they thank everyone who has the capacity to support the RFDA and all their member organizations.

“The demand for food is rising,” she said. “The cost of food has gone up and just living in general. There has been demand from all of our members; food banks are seeing more and more people coming through their doors.”

Some staple items the organization is hoping to collect though the food drive include pasta, pasta sauce, canned meat, canned soup and canned vegetables as well as peanut butter and jam.

Volunteers will be collecting food and monetary donations on Thursday and Friday between 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. They'll be at all local Walmart, Metro, Safeway and No Frills locations as well as at Superstore, the Wholesale Club, FreshCo, Renco, Westfort Foods, Skaf’s and Odena Foods in Kakabeka.
