THUNDER BAY — A special air quality statement has been issued for the city due to forest fire smoke.

Environment Canada issued the advisory Tuesday morning, cautioning that high levels of air pollution have developed from smoke caused by fires burning in northeastern Ontario and Quebec.

Environment Canada said smoke can cause air quality and visibility to fluctuate and can vary from hour to hour. Conditions are expected to improve later Tuesday.

Wildfire smoke can be harmful to health, even at low concentrations, Environment Canada said, adding that people with lung or heart disease, older adults, children, and people who work outdoors are at highest risk of being affected by smoke.
