Former BMO branch on Red River Road gets a new owner

A group of Thunder Bay investors say they believe in the future of the north core

THUNDER BAY — A former bank building at a high-profile location in Thunder Bay's north core will be repurposed.

JSWaG Investments Inc. has purchased the property at Red River Road and Court Street that formerly housed a branch of the Bank of Montreal.

BMO closed the branch in early 2021.

JSWaG spokesperson Jack Mallon says he and his three partners "really believe in that area."

In an interview Wednesday, Mallon said they plan to attract "a very good tenant that's going to service the area, whether it's a restaurant, medical clinic, legal clinic, engineering firm, government agency or an Indigenous group."

Plans include the installation of a BMO ATM.

Mallon said the building has a basement, main floor and mezzanine.

While the owners would prefer to find a single tenant, he said they may end up with tenants for each level.

Mallon noted that the company also owns another commercial property nearby on Red River Road.

"We just have fallen in love with that area, with what the city is doing with it, and the future of it."

He added that the city "has been amazing" with the work it's doing to try to rejuvenate the waterfront district and north core.
