THUNDER BAY – Longtime former city councillor Larry Hebert has died.

He was 77.

Hebert, who served three terms on Thunder Bay city council, was first elected in 2006, before losing his at-large seat in 2018. Hebert was also served more than 20 years as general manager at Thunder Bay Hydro.

He was also a huge part of the local sports community, having starred in basketball at Fort William Collegiate as a teenager and on the executive of the Thunder Bay International Baseball Association, helping to bring the World Junior Baseball Championship to Thunder Bay in 2010 and the U18 Baseball World Cup to the city seven years later.

Hebert ran into legal issues late in his life, and in 2020 was found guilty of one count of assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

He died on Saturday, following a short illness.
