THUNDER BAY -- Former city councillor Ken Whent has died.

Whent, a lawyer by trade, was elected to an at-large position in 2000 and served one term on council, a tumultuous three years for the elected body, and left office in 2003.

Born in Schreiber to Jack and Bluebelle Whent, the family moved to Thunder Bay, where Whent attended Fort William Collegiate Institute. He continued his studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and later at Osgoode Hall, where he obtained his law degree.

Whent returned to Thunder Bay and in 1969, married Marion Louise Hunter, a union that lasted until her death, in 1982. The couple adopted two children, Maggie and Jake.

He wed for a second time in 1991, marrying Sharon Haigh. They remained together until her death in 2016.

Whent retired from his law firm in 2022.

He is survived by his children, two grandchildren and many extended family members.
