FORT FRANCES, Ont. — Multiple investigations are underway following the weekend death of an inmate at the Fort Frances jail.
The Ministry of the Solicitor General says the inmate died on Saturday night.
Paramedics were called to the jail after the person was found in medical distress.
The individual was pronounced dead en route to hospital.
A ministry spokesperson said no further details will be provided pending the outcome of investigations.
The Office of the Chief Coroner will determine the cause and manner of death, while the ministry will do an internal review to learn whether all ministry policies and procedures were followed regarding care and custody of the deceased.
Police may also investigate to determine if the death resulted from any criminal activity.
When inmates die in custody, an inquest is held if the death is due to other than natural causes, and is held at the discretion of the coroner if it results from natural causes.
