FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION — A procedural error, and the resignation of their electoral officer, has Fort William First Nation leadership considering next steps for the community's election.

Fort William First Nation CEO Michael Pelletier, in a notice to the community shared on Facebook, confirmed the situation stems from last week's nomination meeting, where an elector nominated more than one candidate for the position of chief. The issue was not raised until shortly before Monday's deadline for nominees to submit paperwork to become an certified candidate.

The situation led the electoral officer to submit their resignation after an emergency meeting of council.

The notice said leadership is in the process of filling the electoral officer position, and Indigenous Services Canada will be notified of the situation.

The community's election had been scheduled for April 7.
