THUNDER BAY – Crowds made their way out to Fort William Historical Park this weekend to celebrate Anishinaabe Keeshigun.
Anishinaabe Keeshigun is an event that has taken place at the park for over 40 years and aims to teach visitors about the significant contributions of Indigenous Peoples across the fur trade history.
Heritage skill demonstrations were on display, and visitors had the chance to participate in a powwow that highlights regional dancers.
Indigenous Heritage Program Coordinator Elliott Cromarty said that it's important to celebrate Anishinaabe culture and also the coming together for both European and Indigenous cultures.
“Given its root in history that at Fort William that the Anishinaabe would come in, conduct their trade as well as dance within the palisade walls as well,” he said. “But of course, keeping the traditions alive, that of this knowledge has been passed down since time immemorial, is very important to ensure that all our culture remains.”
Attendees also got to experience and learn about Anishinaabe culture, traditions, and technology, by sampling traditional foods and playing traditional sports, like lacrosse.
