Although it’s been around for 40 years, Astronomy Day was a first for Fort William Historical Park.
The international day, which corresponds with a first quarter moon, is a chance for people to head to observatories and science centres and look to the skies. The Fort’s David Thompson Astronomical Observatory got to join in on the fun Saturday.
“It’s a good day to get together and learn about astronomy,” education coordinator Anthony Marrelli said.
The fort had telescopes, a simulated spacewalk, and everything else under the sun, including a solar observation, on display.
“From looking at how different gases burn to how electricity works in our solar system it’s a lot of neat stuff,” Marrelli said.
They were also giving out free solar glasses so people could safely stare at the sun.
“So far it’s been great,” Marrelli said.
