THUNDER BAY – The city’s south side is getting some positive healing through the creation of a Four Sacred Medicine Garden.
The garden was unveiled Tuesday and is located at the corner of Pruden and Simpson Streets.
It was created by the health agency, Anishnawbe Mushkiki, in partnership with Our Kids Count, NorWest Community Health Centre and the Metis Nation of Ontario.
The four medicines in this garden are significant to Aboriginal culture.
The traditional four sacred medicine garden has tobacco growing in the east “sweet grass in the south direction, sage in the west, and in the north we have cedar,” explains Sheila Marcinyshyn, health program lead for Anishnawbe Mushkiki.
“Those are the four traditional four medicines that were given to our people so that it can bridge that gap between all nations … and build relations and grow from that.”
The garden will teach others about the culture, as well as gardening and harvesting.
Dates for gardening this month, will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
