THUNDER BAY – A fourth case of COVID-19 has been detected at Newmont’s Musselwhite mine, about 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.

The case was first detected through ongoing PCR testing being conducted on site at the fly-in gold mine, after two workers were first confirmed positive on Feb. 21.

That result has now been confirmed by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

A third confirmed case was announced on Feb. 23, which Newmont stated was not connected to the previous two.

In a release Friday evening announcing the fourth positive test, the company did not say whether it was believed to be tied to previous cases on site.

As of Wednesday, the first three individuals to test positive had been relocated to isolate off site, along with any high-risk close contacts, the company said.

“We continue to offer our care and support,” the company said.

The mine continues to operate under heightened protocols. Flights to and from the mine site, however, have been suspended pending the completion of surveillance tests.
