THUNDER BAY – A mix of precipitation including freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow is expected to hit the Thunder Bay area on Thursday and Friday, causing potentially hazardous road conditions.
Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for the city Thursday morning, projecting ice accretion of two to five millimetres could occur on untreated surfaces, with a total snow and ice pellet accumulation of five to 10 centimetres.
The agency was calling for rain to transition to freezing rain late Thursday morning, with freezing rain and ice pellets continuing into the evening or overnight.
That’s expected to switch to snow overnight, lasting into Friday.
The temperature was projected to hover near zero throughtout the day.
The winter weather comes as a developing low pressure system moves across parts of northwestern and northern Ontario, Environment Canada said.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous,” the agency warned. “Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”
