THUNDER BAY – Residents are being reminded their item limit for weekly garbage pick-up will drop by one on July 1.

City council earlier this year approved a plan that would reduce the number of items from three to two as a way to encourage more recycling and extend the life of the John Street landfill.

As of Saturday, homeowners will only be allowed to place either two bags or the contents of two cans out for collection, provided the containers don't exceed a weight of 40 pounds.

“A set-out limit for garbage of two or less is considered a best practice in Ontario,” said Jason Sherband, manager of solid waste and recycling services.

“Reducing the item limit for garbage saves valuable natural resources, energy, time and money by encouraging residents to rethink their waste generation habits and recycle more.”

Residents who produce larger amounts of garbage will be allowed to place one additional item at the curb, provided they are willing to pay for it.

Garbage tags are available in groups of five for $10 and can be purchased at city hall, the Victoriaville Civic Centre and EcoSuperior. Starting on Tuesday they’ll also be for sale at all branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library.

The city is also reminding residents to place garbage and recycling at the curb after 4 p.m. the day before collection, but before 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection to avoid being missed.

A number of routes have changed because of realignment of waste collection services.
