THUNDER BAY – A portion of Red River Road became an evacuation zone Tuesday morning after a gas line ruptured.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a gas line leak on the city’s north side around 10:30 a.m., where local contractors working in the area had informed them a gas line had been ruptured.

“Some of the buildings did have gas in them, and they were evacuated” said Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue platoon Chief Kelly Patterson.

Patterson said the buildings evacuated were located on the northwest corner of Red River Road and Court Street.

Union Gas was able to shut down the flow of gas, and firefighters opened up the road again shortly after 11:00 a.m.

Patterson added that at this point they don’t know the actual cause of the incident.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
