George Thompson remembered as 'shop local' pioneer

George Thompson, known to many as the founder and namesake of local grocery George’s Market, has passed away.

THUNDER BAY – George Thompson, known to many as the founder and namesake of local grocery George’s Market, has passed away.

The business announced Thompson’s death via social media on Monday. He was 85.

Born on Jan. 4, 1938, George Thompson launched the shop with his wife, Delores, as Midway Grocery in 1961, passing it to the next generation in 1992.

In a tribute posted online, Thompson was recognized as a pioneer of Thunder Bay’s “shop local” movement and the creator of the city’s first outdoor flower market.

He was described as a hard worker who cared for his customers and made time to help others.

Thompson is survived by two children, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
