Glen Hare declared new Anishinabek Nation Grand Chief

FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION, Ont. —  Glen Hare from M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island was chosen Wednesday to be the Grand Council Chief of the Anishinabek Nation.

Hare won the post in a traditional stand-up election held by delegates meeting on the Fort William First Nation.

He defeated Chief Shining Turtle of the Whitefish River First Nation by a vote of 30 to 10.

The Anishinabek Nation represents 40 First Nations communities in the Lake Superior and Lake Huron regions and southern Ontario.

Hare recently completed his fourth term as Deputy Grand Council Chief, and has been involved in Anishinaabe politics for 33 years.

In a speech, he said "I want to make all of you Chiefs proud...I will honour the direction that you take your community."

Chief Edward Wawia of the Red Rock Indian band was elected Deputy Grand Council Chief for the Northern Superior Region.
