Good Harvest connects residents with local farmers

The event was accepting donations for attendance, with all money raised going towards the Roots Community Food Centre Local Food Fund

THUNDER BAY – The city’s North Core saw hundreds of residents stop by on Sunday in search of healthy fresh produce that local farmers were more than happy to provide.

The Good Harvest Farmers Market, hosted by Goods and Co and the Waterfront District BIA, featured several food producers and farmers onsite including Sleepy G Farm, Bears Bees and Honey, Belluz Farm, Borderlands Farm, and Morning Moon Farm.

Goods and Co-Owner Maelyn Hurley said they started the event to connect local farmers with residents and the community.

“It's our first time spilling this event out onto the street. We have about 20 vendors, you know, mix of farmers and food producers that are set up here today,” she said.

“it's exciting for us because we held it indoors last year and we thought it was a little bit more accessible and easier for the farmers to bring all their local veggies out onto the street.”

Along with fresh local produce, attendees were also able to buy meats, wool, and other items from local vendors, and play farm themed games.

The event was accepting donations for attendance, with all money raised going towards the Roots Community Food Centre Local Food Fund.

Roots Executive Director Erin Beagle said that the partnership between Goods & Co, the Waterfront BIA, and Roots is very important.

“We work really hard to make sure that we can, like, pay our participants really well, like meet the living wage, have really beautiful spaces at our urban farms, and it takes a lot of funds to make that happen,” she said.

“So, this is an event that really supports that this year and we're never sure who's going to show up at a Thunder Bay event. They're very last minute. The weather totally worked out. People are enjoying the space by just occupying the street and wandering and they're with family and friends and pets and strollers.”
