THUNDER BAY -- No girl should miss her prom because she didn’t have a dress.

That’s the idea that led to a new community project, which is focused on providing young women with a free prom wardrobe.

AON Reed Stenhouse is hosting a community service project called Gowns for Girls Saturday from 11 to 4 p.m. at the old Faith Church Building on Secord.

The Gowns for Girls project is an event created to provide free prom dresses, shoes and accessories to young women who cannot otherwise afford them.

Personal Insurance Broker Maria Ciddio said the outpour of generosity from the community has been astonishing.

“We had a goal of 200 dressed,” Ciddio said. “We surpassed that goal and now have a great selection of over 550 dresses to choose from.

“All we need now is the bodies to come in here and pick out their special dress.”

The girls will have the chance to choose the dress of their choice, a pair of shoes, jewelry and a purse.

Ciddio said the project was created to ensure an equal opportunity for young girls to feel special on their graduation day.

AON Reed Stenhouse will be collecting small donations Saturday with all proceeds being donated to Beendigen and Faye Peterson House.
